What is Windows Antivirus Pro?
Windows
Antivirus Pro is a rogue antivirus/antispyware program
that uses false scan results and fake alerts as a method of scaring
you into buying the software.
Then
Windows Antivirus Pro relies on intimidating advertising to trick you
into purchasing its “licensed version”, which is no more
functional than the trial.
Once
your system is infected, Windows Antivirus Pro will create lots of
fakes and harmless files all over your computer. It will then modify
the System Registry so it will be run on each boot.
On
the next re-boot, it will do a fake scan of your computer.
The
scan results are obviously false. Windows Antivirus Pro identifies
any executed program as a computer threat. Windows Antivirus
Pro shows false positives : legitimate files labeled as threats.
Deleting these files might not only prove useless, but can
occasionally deal some serious damage to the system.
You
will also get false, exaggerated system security threats, popups,
fake warnings, serious infections, Internet attacks and more to make
you believe your computer is infected and hugely compromised. They
will link you straight to a purchase page.
Most
of the time these fake,
but legitimately looking alerts will come from the Task bar and
Windows Security Center. Windows Antivirus Pro will also hijack your
Internet Explorer and display warnings about insecure Internet
connection or other threats.
Windows
Antivirus Pro disables the ability to run any programs, including
MalwareBytes’ Anti-Malware. Security applications will be blocked
in first place.
Likely, you won't be able to
perform a system restore or even access the Control Panel.
The
following alert will be shown when you try to run any program (files
with “exe” extension):
« This
application has failed to start because the application configuration
is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. »
While Windows
Antivirus Pro is running your computer will display nag screens and
fake security alerts, like:
« Security
Warning Malicious
programs that may steal your private information and prevent your
system from working properly are detected on your computer. Click
here to clean your PC immediately. »
« svchost.exe svchost.exe
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
inconvenience. »
Also
the program will show fake a Windows Security Center that will
recommend you use Windows Antivirus Pro.
In
addition to these annoying features, Windows Antivirus Pro will
also slow down the system. This malware will stays resident in the
background.
How did I get infected with Windows Antivirus Pro ?
This
malware uses Trojans, such as Vundo or Zlob, to enter your computer.
Although it can also be downloaded and installed manually. Like
coming from fake online anti-malware scanners.
Windows Antivirus Pro will infect your computer from many possible
ways. The first one is from downloading fake codec. Once done and
installed, Windows Antivirus Pro will but launch itself. This is a common
and usual trick done by such trojans.
Another way is through fake online scanner. Here again
Windows Antivirus Pro will trick users to download some application and this
way to get installed.
The last method involved the creation or modification of
websites. Hackers will then install on such websites their own
application, e.g. Windows Antivirus Pro, and others. Users should always
keep an recent and updated security program before browsing websites.
Such websites will push some transfer onto the user's computers. This
is called drive by download. Once accepted and if the threat is a
recent one and the user do not detect any 'malware'... the computer
then become infected.
